Cynthia de la Torre graduated from the University of California in Irvine this year with a degree in Literary Journalism. What drew her to literary journalism was the fact that as a literary journalist, she could camouflage herself to fit the environment that she is observing.

She enjoys being the "fly on the wall" and learning about the lives of others. During her time at UC Irvine, she wrote articles on the raw food movement in Los Angeles, an immersion piece that shed light on Gamblers Anonymous, and a narrative on Courage, the Orange County German shepherd who survived severe neglect and whose owner faces felony animal cruelty charges.
During her third year at UC Irvine, she took her writing experience to a different medium--radio. She participated in a KUCI class where she learned FCC laws and radio protocol so that she could ultimately produce her own show on KUCI. On her show, titled "Urban Hiking," Cynthia shared with her audience free and interesting things to do in the OC.
In the summer of that year, Cynthia earned a summer grant that took her to Blue Mountain Lake, NY to work closely with Professor Carol Burke in order to interview miners and produce and edit radio clips that the Adirondack Museum could use in its upcoming mining exhibit.
During her fourth year, Cynthia learned how to effectively fact-check and conduct follow-up interviews while working as an intern at Orange Coast Magazine. At Orange Coast Magazine, she was also given the opportunity to have two of her articles published--one on the aforementioned German shepherd, Courage and the other on the top 5 most popular dogs in ten OC communities. Besides having a passion for dogs, Cynthia also has a passion for the environment. She shared this passion by being a member and then the treasurer of the Orange County Chapter for the Society of Conservation Biology.
Having moved back to her home in Los Angeles, she looks forward to hiking in Griffith Park with her family and spending more time at one of her favorite LA spots, the Griffith Observatory. She hopes to ultimately become an NPR correspondent while still continuing to write in her free time.
