ISO Issues Statewide Flex Alert - Blackouts Possible

High heat and increased air conditioner usage will be placing strain on power systems statewide.

 

A statewide Flex Alert has been issued by the Independent Systems Operator (ISO) and was expected to run through Sunday evening. 

According to the ISO, higher than normal temperatures statewide are causing power usage to spike, placing strain on the power grid. If usage is not curtailed, blackouts are possible.

The Flex Alert urges all Californians to reduce power usage and shift non-essential use until after 6:00 p.m. 

Sierra Madre's forecast has included temperatures over a hundred degrees all week and triple-digit temperatures are expected to continue through Saturday, Patch earlier reported.

Three steps are recommended by the ISO: 

  • Turn off all unnecessary lights, computers and appliances.
  • Adjust your air conditioning thermostat to 78 degrees or higher.  Use a fan when possible.
  • Postpone using major appliances and equipment until after 6:00 p.m. 

Edison also urged residents to during the heat wave to avoid added stress on the power grid.
