Spring Sports Notebook: Alverno Well Represented in All-League, La Salle Looking Strong

Alverno dominates All-Horizon League squads.

Thanks to league championships in both girls soccer and basketball, Alverno was well represented on the All-Horizon League teams.

In basketball, Jasmin Ross, Mimi Capra and Marissa Seanez earned first-team all-league honors. Kristina Cortez earned second team honors as did Erica Tavera.

In girls soccer,  seniors Maha Adballah and Gaby Vasquez and junior Celina Minissian earned first-team honors. Senior Karineh Minissian, junior Kassie Saavedra and sophomore MacKenzie Winslow earned second-team honors.

La Salle competes in Oaks Christian/Village Christian Inviational

La Salle did well in the Oaks Christian/Village Christian Invitational track meet on Saturday.

Defending Division IV discus champion Itohan Aikhionbare finished second in her event with a throw of 103 feet, 1 inch. Aikhionbare has a personal best of 131 feet, 6 inches.

The Lancers got a solid performance from Christopher Alvarado in the discus as he threw a distance of 127 feet, 2 inches.

Kishon Sanders was second in the boys shot put with a best of 41 feet, 6 inches.

Sophomore Alessandra Gonzales ran a time of 13.15 seconds in the 100 meters to put her eighth on the school’s top-10 list.

La Salle baseball

La Salle improved to 2-1 Tuesday with a 12-2 home win over Beverly Hills High. Garry Goebel went the distance, allowing just four hits and one earned run to pick up his first victory of the season.  He also had two hits for the Lancers.  John Auer had a home run for La Salle.

La Salle boys volleyball

La Salle is ranked No. 8 in the CIF-Southern Section Division IV coaches’ poll. The Lancers have started the season 4-1, picking up some wins in the Providence Tournament.

The only setback was to Chadwick of Palos Verdes Peninsula. Chadwick is ranked No. 2 in the CIF Division V poll.

Led by coach Ben Diaz, the Lancers have recorded notable wins over Pasadena Poly and Flintridge Prep.

La Salle softball

The La Salle softball team has started its season at 3-1. The Lancers have earned victories over Canyon Crest Academy, Marymount and San Bernardino. The Lancers’ lone loss came at the hands of Aquinas of San Bernardino.

Caroline Knop has been a big surprise at the plate going 7-for-11. Knop leads the team for players with at least 10 at-bats with a .636 batting average.

Sophomore Katie Smither leads the team in stolen bases with six.
