La Salle Boys Soccer Blanks Monrovia

Zanetta and Gilatti score goals in the Lancers' win

The La Salle boys soccer team remained undefeated this year as the Lancers shutout Monrovia 2-0 on the road Friday night.

La Salle scored a goal in each half and generally kept the Wildcat offense stymied the entire game. La Salle improves to 6-0 on the season on the season, and the Lancers seem to be playing inspiring soccer.

"The first goal put a lot of pressure on their defenders and the defender turned the ball over to the end line, then Ben Reed pulled it back and Briley Venti had a nice touch on it and laid it off to Sam Zanetta, spotted in the corner," La Salle coach Dan Sheridan said.

Monrovia seemed to tire in the second half. The Wildcats beat Pasadena Poly 2-1 on Thursday night, but playing games on back-to-back nights proved to be too much for Monrovia. La Salle took advantage of the Wildcats physical limitations on its lone second half goal. La Salle received a spectacular individual effort on the second and final goal of the game by sophomore forward Gianmarco Gilatti. Gilatti split several Monrovia players with deft ball handling and eventually beat the goalie as well.

"On the second goal we put lot of pressure on the team the whole game with a lot of high pressure," Sheridan said. "If you knock on the door we're going to get that, I think the boys played well."

Throughout their 6-0 start, the Lancers have done a lot of things right.

"I'm very pleased, very happy, practice has been good and the guys really believe in themselves," Sheridan said.

La Salle now must put its streak on hold, as the Lancers won't play again until they face Maranatha on Jan. 4. The players, fans and coaches all seem very pleased with the way the season has started and Sheridan seems to like this particular group a lot.

"We have a got a good chance this year," he said.
