Interact Club Members Visit Rotary
Here's this week's roundup of the happenings at the Sierra Madre Rotary Club.
Is this a fine lookin’ bunch, or what? This, my friends, is your Interact Club...well, about 75% of them anyway. They’re also our newest subscribers – they are now on The Vine distribution list.
Here they are at last Monday night’s meeting, planning service projects for their community. They’ll be helping the Sierra Madre Historical Preservation Society with it’s fundraiser next week, and are scheduling themselves to pack food boxes in November and December for needy families served by the Foothill Unity Center. They’ve invited Alan and Voki to present at their next meeting; they’re looking for an International project and want to be educated on the Life Straw. They’ll be assisting us with Dickens Village this year, and have started a yearlong project to collect new and gently used books that will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House.
This is a busy, fast-moving bunch. The group numbers about twenty right now, and has representatives from five area high schools. They meet on the first and third Mondays of the month at Sierra Madre Elementary School. We encourage you to drop in for a visit. The meetings go quickly. Monday’s started at 7 PM, and they were adjourned by 7:25. Best of all, though, you’ll find yourself among a great group of students who care about their community, and their world.

Pres Tom got our meeting rolling at about 7:15. That fine looking fellow with him is Past Pres Rudy, who was also our program.
More about that later. Our guests this morning were Walter’s lovely wife, Nancy, the incomparable Dave Ruprecht, and the fabulous Lydia Kerns.

Pres Tom’s first order of business was to ask Lydia to come forward to tell us about the award she received from the City of Sierra Madre, at a ceremony held at Alverno High School last week. She was honored with Sierra Madre’s Youth Service Award. Lydia told us that much of the work for which she won the award was the result of her involvement with Interact. She was nominated for the honor by Marilyn.
Pres Tom then called on Jennie to give us an update on Teen Leadership Camp, or TLC. Jennie’s got a fine committee lined up and four strong 8th grade participants. Rotary Facilitators are still needed, though, and she encouraged all of us to visit the District website and fill out an application.
Jennie further explained that TLC is scheduled for November 4-6, in Orange County. Visit the District website for more information—click on “TLC” toward the bottom left.
Then, Dr. Bud got busy with the Happy Bucks. Walter and Nancy just returned from ten days in Washington state. They had a chance to visit with Carmen and Bob, who’ve downsized to a 4,200 square foot home. The burning question for this reporter though, was, “What about Gator??” Walter reported that all is well with Gator, who continues his reign as “Master of the House.” Pres Tom showed us an article in the newspaper announcing that Jennie has been inducted into the Water Polo Hall of Fame. The Alle’s took Arturo to another football game; Jeff was finally able to get a membership application from Dave, who was Jeff’s Rotary sponsor years ago; Rudy and Susanne just re-financed their house; Walter was glad to see Dave, and believes our singing will improve now that Dave is back; Walter also was glad to have Nancy along to hear Rudy’s presentation even though she didn’t attend Walter’s a few months back; Dave is glad that his wife has returned from China; Janice is happy to be done with jury duty, and survived an Earth, Wind & Fire concert; Dan thanked Peggy for opening her home to Arturo; Dr. Bud appreciates Alan and Voki’s work on the Life Straw project; Marilyn was happy about Dave, Jennie and Peggy; Pres Tom and Julie are enjoying spending their Friday nights with musician friends and good wine; Janice jumped in again, thanking Alan and Voki for hosting a pre-Sierra Madre Playhouse party at their home, and suggested Pres Tom be fined for falling asleep during the play. Pres Tom’s defense “It was a VERY relaxing play!” Rudy noted that Santa Anita Park is back to racing this Friday.
Dan then introduced Rudy, or rather told us some things about him you may not have known: he’s an accomplished pianist, a tri-athlete, and a black belt in Shotokan karate ( 松濤館流 ), and competed in the Iron Man contest in Hawaii. As for his Rotary back-ground, he’s done just about everything at the club level, and has been tapped by the District for service a number of times as well.
Rudy spent the summer at Wellspring La Jolla Family Camp, acting as a Behavioral Coach for individuals wanting to lose weight by consistently making more healthy choices in their lives. Wellspring is effective because it takes a scientific approach to weight loss, helping its clients to achieve their goals through permanent behavior change. Rudy wanted to experience the same things his clients did, so he ate the same food they ate, participated in the same activities. In short he did everything he asked of them. He says it was a humbling experience.
Rudy says the Wellspring diet has five components—controlled sugar, fewer than twenty grams of fat per day, frequent protein, increased low-density foods, and eating—not drinking–calories. It must be effective—Rudy lost 34 pounds over the summer. Wellspring also encourages people to be label conscious when deciding what to consume, and to spend time with like-minded people. Paying attention to caloric intake is also important. Women should be at 1,000—1,200 calories a day; men 1,500– 1,800 a day. Combining this with a simple exercise regimen of walking 10,000 steps (about 4 miles) a day produces remarkable results.
Rudy says that the mindset of a permanent weight controller is this: Sustained preoccupation and focus with planning and execution of target behaviors used to reach health goals.
