Discovering An Ideal Husband

The Sierra Madre Playhouse offers up a sumptuous production of Oscar Wilde's, An Ideal Husband to open our 2014 season. This is a thrilling drama laced with some of Wilde's best wit and social commentary.  The plot tell introduces us to Sir Robert Chiltern, a brilliant rising politician who faces the possible destruction of his career and the loss of his adoring wife's love when a beautiful and well connected socialite threatens to reveal an appalling secret from the legislator's youth.

Easily ripped from today's headlines, Wilde wrote An Ideal Husband during the decade known as the "Yellow" or "Naughty Nineties", the twilight years of England's Victorian era. Wilde rebelled against Victorian sensibilities, calling for a world judged by the beauty of it's art rather than its moral value.  This play celebrates social theatricality, and the pleasures of style and affectation.

Director Gigi Bermingham returns to Sierra Madre Playhouse where she starred in “Arcadia” in 2010 to direct this piece from the classic canon of literature. Ms. Bermingham is fresh from winning the 2013 Ovation Award as Best Actress in “Master Class” at International City Theatre.  Another Ovation award winner is costume designer, Naila Aladdin Sanders, whose end of the Century costuming is real highlight of the production.

The production runs Friday, January 17 thorugh February 23.  Contact our box office at (626)355-4318 or or go to www.sierramadreplayhouse.org for further information or to purchase tickets online.
