Three Young La Salle Artists Receive Prestigious 'Gold Key' Awards

Alliance for Young Artists & Writers competition garnered 185,000 submissions nationwide.

Out of the 185,000 works submitted to Scholastic’s Alliance for Young Artists & Writers competition in the visual and literary arts, the work of three La Salle High School  students ranked among the 12,000 works to be honored with a Regional Gold Key award.

Alec Shumate, Andrew Linaac, and Stephanie Delazeri are among just 94 students in Los Angeles County that received the regional "Gold Key Award" in the competition, one of the most prestigious recognition and scholarship programs for young artists and writers in the country.

Senior Alec Shumate won for his digital art work, a computerized drawing of a circa-1950s soldier smoking a cigarette. The piece utilized both drawing and digitalization. The 17-year-old also won a Silver Key award and three honorable mention awards for his other digital art submissions, according to a statement from La Salle High School.

Junior Andrew Linaac received his Gold Key award for his drawing of “Suicide Bridge,” which is the Colorado Boulevard Bridge over the Arroyo Seco.

Also according to that same statement from La Salle, Linaac, 16, said he drew the bridge based on a photograph taken by fellow-classmate Hannah Volckmann. He also viewed the bridge and looked deeply into its history, as the “jumping off” point for those who lost everything in the Great Depression.

Sophomore Stephanie Delazeri received a Gold Key award for her short, hand-drawn animation film about different birds arriving at a bird convention, where a worm mistakenly arrives and gets eaten.

“It was my first film so it was pretty simple,” she said in the release. “I was very surprised by winning this award. It has given me an even greater motivation to continue drawing and animating, which are my passions in life.”

Four other La Salle students, including Leanne Bishara, Aurora Doreza, Cheyenne Gallegos and Carolyn Hauk, received Silver Key awards for their submissions.

“Leanne’s award was particularly special since it was for a complete photography portfolio which is a very competitive and difficult category,” Ellen Slatkin, La Salle’s art and photography teacher said in a statement.
