Pasadena High School Senior Wins 2011 National Merit Scholarship

Sierra Madre's Marjorie Hunt is one of only 8,400 winners of the prestigious award.

Sierra Madre resident Marjorie Hunt, a senior at Pasadena High School, has been selected as a winner of the National Merit Scholarship Program, a prestigious academic competition started in 1955 that awards scholarships to students based on SAT scores, grade point averages and other considerations.

In her quest for the scholarship Hunt competed against 1.5 million students who entered the program nationwide, and is among only 8,400 of those who werre selected as winners, with more than $36 million in scholarships awarded this year, according to Pasadena Unified School District Communications Director Hilda Horvath

A 4.0 student on the PHS non-weighted grading system, Hunt has maintained a perfect academic record and is one of several who will be considered for the honor serving as  valedictorian for the class of 2011 graduation commencement coming up this June.

But this isn't Hunt's first time being recognized for her academic achievements. Just this year, Hunt was the winner of the annual scholarship.

In addition to these honors, Hunt has served as president of the Interact Club at Pasadena High School, is a member of the National Honor Society, and has been a member of the Dance Club.

Following graduation, Hunt has chosen to attend Wesleyan University in Connecticut.

The NMSC is a non-profit organization established to conduct the National Merit Program, whose funds are underwritten by over 500 business and educational institutions and organizations.

“We are tremendously proud of Marjorie’s accomplishments and the work she has done," PHS Principal Gilbert Barrazza said in a May 17 interview with Patch. "She has put Pasadena High School on the national map. We are grateful for the many teachers who have influenced her along her way, and look forward to following her future achievements. We are bursting with pride!”
