Map: Compare PUSD Student Suspension Rates to All of L.A. County

You can look up how often students were suspended across the county at each district and each school using the below map and database.

Last month we brought you a break down of how many students were suspended at each school in Pasadena Unified - the map and database above show how Pasadena Unified schools compare to every other school in the county.

The data comes from a report issued in April by the California Department of Education, which looks at suspensions, expulsion and truancy at schools across the state.  More data on the subject can be found at the state's website under the 'Expulsion, Suspension and Truancy' category.

As reported last month, Pasadena Unified students were suspended at a rate above state and county average, with 8.3 percent of students suspended in 2011-12, compared to 4.4 percent county-wide and 5.7 percent state-wide.

At PUSD there were 1,776 students suspended at least once in 2011-12.

As part of the report California's Department of Education says it is undertaking steps to understand why districts are suspending so many students and to lower suspension rates across the state.

How to Use the Above Map and Form

The above map shows the suspension rate for each unified school district in the county.  Districts that service just one level of school are not pictured on the map.  Clicking on each district gives the suspension rate, expulsion rate, truancy rates and more.

The map's is color-coded so that the bright red districts are those above county average.  The maroon shade is between the 4.4 percent county average and the 5.7 percent state average.  The pink shade is below county average and the lightest shade shows districts with a suspension rate of 50 percent below the county average.

The database below the map allows you to look up more data for each school district or for any individual school in the county.  Be sure to use just one of the two categories to search; use either 'district' or 'school,' not both.

On the list of schools the database shows, schools in green have suspension rates at least 10 percent below the state average, while yellow schools are within 10 percent and red ones at least 10 percent above.

Please note the raw figures for suspensions show the number of students suspended not the total number of suspensions - some students were suspended more than once.
