Classes Begin for La Salle High School Students

Orientation program pares freshmen with seniors who help newcomers learn the ropes.

While classes for pubic schools don't begin until Aug. 31, is already back in session, having started classes on Aug. 18.

This year, 183 new freshman joined the private Catholic school.In total, La Salle has 740 students, most of whom live in Sierra Madre and other parts of the San Gabriel Valley.

A "Welcome Orientation" was held on the second day of school where small groups of incoming freshman paired off with "Senior Class Buddies" who guided them on a campus tour, video presentations and a run-through of classes. All students later enjoyed a pizza lunch followed by a spirit rally.

“We believe the education we deliver to our students is of the highest quality,” La Salle Principal Patrick Bonacci said in a statement.

In that same statement, La Salle noted that, though they are a private institution, 15% of students admitted come from low income families. Those students receive full or partial tuition assistance through the San Miguel and Brother Celestine Scholarship Funds.

The La Salle Lancers field 22 teams on the varsity level, inclduing a football team, which Patch wrote about earlier this week.

The school also recently unvelieved a new logo for their atheletic teams to wear when they compete against other schools.
