Alverno Students Honor 26 at 'Girls Lead' Awards

"Recognizing young women who are already making their mark in middle school" - Ann Gillick, Alverno Head of School

Alverno High School honored middle school women leaders at the Sierra Madre-based, private girls’ school for the third year in April.

“When we are reviewing applicants for 9th grade, we are frequently amazed by the leadership girls have shown in middle school," Admissions Director Candace Siegle said. "We decided that it fit our mission perfectly to recognize these girls and encourage them to continue the positive roles they are taking in their schools.”

Public, independent, and Catholic middle school administrators from the surrounding area in San Gabriel Valley are asked to nominate a 6th and 7th grade girl for the awards each year.

“We ask for girls who are making a difference through leadership in the community or their schools,” Siegle said.

This year, twenty six young women were recognized at the school’s award ceremonies on April 19th at the school, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary during the 201-11 school year.

Keynote speaker Sierra Madre Police Chief Marilyn Diaz has indeed made her mark and inspired other women when she made national news in 2006 as the first female police chief in Los Angeles County.

Siegle quoted Diaz’s address: “I’m inspired by you. The values instilled by your parents and your teachers are the values that will be with you for a lifetime."

Alverno’s own school leaders, 2010-11 Alverno Student Union (ASU)  president, Julia Morreale, 2011-12 ASU president Yasmine Ibrahim joined in the award ceremony as announcers, offering their own insights on school leadership to the day’s honorees.
