Alverno High School Senior Recognized by L.A. Archdiocese for Community Service

Regina Cabrera received the Archdiocese of Los Angeles Christian Service Award from Archbishop Jose H. Gomez.

In one of his first acts since taking the role as Archbishop, Jose H. Gomez presented awards to high school students from around the Los Angeles Archdiocese for service to their community and parish. Regina Cabrera, a senior at Sierra Madre’s Alverno High School was among those honored, receiving the Archdiocese of Los Angeles Christian Service Award during a presentation at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles.

In her school government position as Secretary of Campus Ministry, Regina has been an involved student leader, organizing retreats for Alverno students, planning prayer services, masses, and other religious events, according to school administrators.

“Regina is an inspiration,” Campus Minister Susana Capra said in a statement released by the school following the award announcement. “Regina is an incredible example to our students and has put endless hours into Alverno’s Campus Ministry program and community service. She is incredibly deserving of this award and we are lucky to call her an Alverno student. ”

A talented soccer player herself, Regina said that one of her most satisfying volunteer activities has been her involvement with KEEN (Kids Enjoy Exercise Now) an organization providing one-on-one recreational opportunities for children with physical and developmental disabilities.

“The Alverno mission is to empower each young woman to be exactly the person she wants to be,” Alverno Head of School Ann Gillick said in the statement. “For her positive, giving spirit, Regina is a role model to us all.”
