Alverno Cross County Team Wins League Championship

The team bested Sacred Heart Academy at Eaton Canyon Park to take the Horizon League title.

's Cross Country Varsity Team captured the 2011 Horizon League Championship with a team win by the score of 33-50 over Sacred Heart at the Oct. 19 meet held at Eaton Canyon. 

The championship, their first since 2007, qualifies the Varsity to compete at the CIF Southern Section prelims on Nov. 12, at the Mt. San Antonio course.

The varsity team, which is comprised of juniors Katherine Haysbert, Eryn Blakely, freshman Rachel Achterman, juniors Ashley Haylett, and Adrianna Martinez finished 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 11th and 12th respectively to secure the victory.

Helping their teammates in the victory were sophomores Jessica Lopez and Brett Richey.

Repeat Championship for Junior Varsity

The Alverno Junior Varsity matched the Varsity by also winning their meet 24-39 over Bishop Conaty and taking the Horizon League Championship for the second year in a row.

They were led by freshmen Rose Boubion, Sophia Villalovos and sophomores Victoria Pintado, Bella Daniels-Campos and Regan Dowd.

Mt. Sac Invitational

But the season isn't over yet. Posting their best finish ever, Alverno’s Varsity team finished 6th overall at the 64th Mt. Sac Cross Country Invitational held Friday, Oct. 21, 2011 at the Mt. San Antonio campus in Walnut. 

The rugged 3 mile course with a diverse surfaces and terrain of hills aptly named “Poop Out Hill”, “Reservoir Hill” “Valley Loop” and “Switchbacks” is a challenge to the runners. Alverno runners were among the 114 runners that competed in Division 5 (small schools) Varsity race #38. 

Official results listing top finishers for Alverno were juniors Katherine Haysbert, 4th (20:04) and Eryn Blakely, 6th (20:22). Adding to Alverno’s score were freshman Rachel Achterman, 47th (24:34) and juniors Adrianna Martinez, 85th (26:44) and Ashley Haylett 86th (26:48). Only the Varsity Team’s top 5 finishers count towards the team score. Sophomore Brett Richey, running her first race on the Mt. Sac course finished 103rd (30:39). Haysbert and Blakely were awarded medals for finishing in the top 20.

In the crowded Division 5 Freshman Race # 26 with a total of 190 runners finishing and competing for the first time at Mt. Sac were Sophia Villalovos, 138th (28:50) and Rose Boubion, 139th (28:52). In Division 5 Sophomore Race # 29, Alverno runners Victoria Pintado, (31:50), Bella Daniels-Campos (32:07) and Reagan Dowd (33:58) competed amongst 188 runners.

The next Horizon League meet for the Jaguars is hosted by San Gabriel Mission and will be run at the Crescenta Valley County Park Course. On Wednesday Nov. 2, it’s the League Finals at the Eaton Canyon Park course.
