Tonight: Public Hearing on Kensington Project

The City Council will hold a public hearing tonight regarding the Kensington Project, the proposed assisted living facility that would occupy just under two acres at 225-45 W. Sierra Madre Blvd.

Tonight the City Council will hold a public hearing regarding the Kensington Project, an assisted living facility that, if approved, would sit at 225-245 W. Sierra Madre Blvd in Sierra Madre. Residents with an interest in the project are invited to attend and share their opinion. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, 232 W. Sierra Madre Blvd. in Sierra Madre.

Measure V is an ordinance in Sierra Madre that restricts new buildings in the downtown area to two stories that are no more than 30 feet in height and limits buildings to 13 dwelling units per acre. The Kensington project would sit on about two acres and consist of 75 residential suites, according to plans.

“…Unless this project complies with Measure V, neither the City Council nor the electorate may approve any of its components, without first amending Measure V,” city documents say regarding the 60,100 square foot building.

Kensington developers have requested that the amendment be placed on the November ballot.

A Specific Plan is also required for the project.

The Planning Commission Recommends Kensington Approval

The Kensington Project has been the subject of numerous Planning Commission meetings and has gone through several revisions since January.

The Planning Commission has recommended approval of the Specific Plan and Municipal Code Text Amendment, and has granted the project a Conditional Use Permit.

The developers currently propose a 60,100 square foot assisted living facility with 58 studio suites, seven one-bedroom suites and ten two-bedroom suites for 96 residents; 43 parking spaces; courtyard and a commercial storefront.

Correction: An earlier version of this story stated, "In order to be built as proposed, the two-story, 60,100 square foot building would require voters to amend Measure V." An amendment is only needed if officials decide the plans are not in compliance with Measure V. Patch apologizes for the error.
