Sierra Madre Names 'Honors Award' Winners
These six prestigious awards are presented each year to groups and individuals chosen by a committee comprised of past winners.
The has announced the 2011 winners of the "Sierra Madre Honors" awards, which recognize outstanding local individuals and organizations who have contributed to the community over the past year or more.
Each year's winners are chosen by a special ad-hoc committee that's comprised of past year's award winners.
All the winners will be officially recognized at an upcoming "Recognition and Appreciation Dinner," which, in addition to honoring the year's award winners, also recognizes all out-going city commissioners.

This year’s dinner will be held in late September, though city officials have yet to release an exact date.
"This is an exciting event and the City’s opportunity to recognize and honor the true treasures of Sierra Madre, its volunteers, City Commissioners and employees," city spokesperson Elisa Weaver said in an official announcement Monday.

Members of city commissions and committees volunteer their time to help direct municipal policy by holding monthly meetings and voting on recommendations that are sent to the City Council. Currently, Sierra Madre has a number of vacancies on various commissions and committees.
What follows is a complete list of this year's award winners. Each entry also includes a brief description of the purpose and intent of each award.
George Maurer Lifetime Service Award
Winner: Gordon Caldwell
Presented to a person/entity that most strongly represents a commitment to serving and volunteering, which is the true spirit of Sierra Madre.
Wistaria Award
Winner: Sierra Madre Friends of the Library
In recognition of City/Community partnership, presented to a local business or organization whose major contributions to the City/Community of Sierra Madre have demonstrated a true partnership that assists in and provides services, programs, or enhances the general welfare of the community as a whole.
Police Chief’s Special Award
Winner: Jeannette Dabney
Presented by the Sierra Madre Chief of Police to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding dedication to duty (employee) or service (community) in resolving a community law enforcement-related issue.
Public Safety Award
Winner: Casey Morrisey
Presented by the Mayor to an individual, either an employee or citizen, who took action to protect and maintain the safety of the community by taking lifesaving action.
Public Service Award
Winner: Toni Buckner
Employee of the Year – presented by the Mayor upon the recommendation of the City Manager to an extraordinary city employee who has represented remarkable customer and public service as well as dedication to the citizens of Sierra Madre over the course of a year.
Community Youth Service Award
Winner: Lydia Kerns
Presented to a young adult in the community who demonstrates dedication and outstanding service to the community.
