PUSD Projecting $8.7 Million Deficit

The Pasadena Unified School District is projecting an $8.7 million budget deficit in its first look at the 2012-13 budget year, which starts in July.

The PUSD Board is scheduled to review the preliminary report at its Tuesday meeting.  The report is the the first look at projecting the next fiscal year at the school district.

For the current fiscal year, which ends this June, PUSD is looking at an $8.1 million budget deficit.

The preliminary report assumes that the district will see similar state funding levels to the 2011-2012 year.

Figures in the report show the district expects $5,241 per student, based on the average daily attendance per pupil. That's down from a 2007 peak of $5,799, according to the report.

The district's proposed spending for the upcoming year is $27 million short of district spending in 2007-08.  

The report also details the long-term plan of the school district to continue to cut spending and trim the deficit in 2013-2014 to about $1.5 million and to have a small surplus in 2014-2015.  

If the district's budget projections are accurate, it will be down to just under $7 million in cash reserves by June 2013, the end of the upcoming fiscal year.
