Metro Offical Speaks Out Against 710 Tunnel (Video)

Glendale City CouncilmanAra Najarian addressed a crowd last month on the 710 Tunnel Expansion project.

Glendale City Councilman and Metro board member Ara Najarian spoke out against a proposed tunnel extension of the 710 Freeway, saying he was committed to stopping the project.

The comments came during a speech about state of Montrose on Nov. 28, though Najarian's main focus was on the 710 tunnel.

Najarian is currently on the Metro board but has not gotten the votes necessary to be reappointed in 2013, which he has said is the result of his oppostion to the 710.

  • "This is something we have to stop and I am committed to stop," Najarian said.
  • Najarian suggested a light rail between Pasadena and the ports to place shipping containers to head on the Alameda Corridor East.
  • Expects the tunnel will directly impact Foothill communities, including Montrose, La Crescenta, La Canada Flintridge, Pasadena, Altadena and South Pasadena.
  • "Once you get on this tunnel, you are on it for five miles... It's a catastrophe waiting to happen if a truck flips and starts on fire. It makes no sense at all for you and me," Najarian said.
