Huff Measure Focuses on Dangers of Food Allergies

May 13 to 19 will be Food Allergy Awareness Week, according to new legislation introduced by Senator Bob Huff.

Sen. Bob Huff (R-Diamond Bar), who represents Sierra Madre, is authoring new legislation designed to raise awareness of food allergies.

SCR 67 designates May 13 to 19, 2012 as Food Allergy Awareness Week in California.

“I am excited to help draw attention to what is becoming a serious epidemic in our society,” said Huff in a statement. “Given that there is no known cure for food allergies and reactions can be fatal if untreated, it is important to raise awareness in the public as to the seriousness of the condition. I appreciate the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network for bringing this issue to my attention and for their nationwide efforts to raise awareness and recognize this week in May.”

The Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN) is sponsoring SCR 67. According to the organization, an estimated 15 million Americans have food allergies, with an estimated six million of those affected 18 and under. Symptoms of food allergies range from rashes, hives and swelling to trouble breathing and loss of consciousness.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that reactions to food allergies cause more than 300,000 ambulatory care visits for those 18 and under.

“Due to the severity and rising number of this phenomenon that affects so many of our children, I believe it’s crucial that we do our best to increase awareness about this issue,” Huff said. “Organizations like FAAN are committed to raising public awareness, providing advocacy and education, and advancing research on behalf of all those affected by food allergies and anaphylaxis.”
