Free Chainsaw Assistance, Wind Recovery Info

How to get free chainsaw assistance and what to do if you need debris removed after Wednesday, which is the last day the city will pick up curbside debris.

If you're still cleaning up after the epic windstorm that ravaged Sierra Madre nearly two weeks ago, here are some reminders and alerts that may be of use:

Free Chainsaw Assistance: A group of regional volunteers have contacted the City to offer their chainsaw services to residents in need. If you're interested, contact the Sierra Madre Public Works Department at 626-355-7135 for more information.

Debris Pick-up: Wednesday is the last day City crews will be picking up curbside debris. If you still have an excess of leftover storm debris, Athens offers four free large-item pick-ups per year. Call them at (888) 336-6100 or visit their website to schedule a special pick up. You can also continue to use your green bins for smaller amounts of debris.

Trash Service is operating on a normal schedule, but Athens has indicated that the route is taking a bit longer than usual due to debris in the streets.

Getting State and Federal Assistance: Cal EMA and FEMA recently toured Sierra Madre and indicated the city and some residents will likely qualify for aid, but the city needs to know how much property was damaged so they can give an accurate estimate to these agencies. The city asks you to...

Report Property Damage by calling 2-1-1 or visiting www.211la.org.

Watch Out For Broken Trees and Branches. Many trees have been weakend and branches are hanging precariously. Be careful when walking and parking. The city asks that you report any potential hazards to City Hall at 626-355-7135 or the police department at 626-355-1414. The city says that they will work to remove the hazards as quickly as possible.

Overnight Parking Restrictions have been suspended until the end of December. You can also use the city's public lots for overnight parking until the end of the month.

Be Wary of Solicitors. Since the storm there has been an influx of individuals soliciting services in Sierra Madre, including debris clean up and repairs. Several illegal solicitors have been cited by police, and a few have been found to be on parole. See our for . If you are approached by a solicitor, check with City Hall at 626-355-7135 to verify whether they have a business license. If you need services, it's a good idea to ask friends and family for contractor recommendations.

When Will Clean-Up Be Done? City crews are clearing streets from east to west. Mayor John Buchanan has indicated that clean-up efforts will likely last until the end of December.
