Emergency Test To Occur Today at 11 a.m.

The national emergency alert system will be tested this morning, interrupting all television, radio, cable and satellite shows for approximately one minute.

The federal government will be testing the nation's Emergency Alert System today at 11 a.m. They urge you to "Don't Stress; It's Only a Test."

All television, radio, cable and satellite shows will be interrupted for approximately 45 to 60 seconds. You may hear tone sounds followed by the message "this is a test."

The EAS is an alert and warning system that allows the President to communicate information to the public during nationwide emergencies. This is the first test of the EAS.

State and local officials and the National Weather Service can also activate parts of the system during localized incidents.

The test is being conducted to determine the effectiveness and reliability of the system.

All television and radio stations across the 50 states and D.C plus Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and American Samoa will be interrupted.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are joining together with the federal government for the test.
