Councilmember Critical of Chief Payne's Use of Nixle

Councilmember Robert Joe expressed concern on the use of Nixle for political purposes.

At Wednesday's South Pasadena City Council meeting, the question of the appropriateness of using the Nixle Safety Alert System to express personal opinion came up.

The Pasadena Star News had reported Wednesday that South Pasadena Police Chief Joseph Payne posted his opinion on Gov. Jerry Brown's stance on prisons and criminal justice via the Nixle public safety alert system. Payne opined that AB 109, which realigned the state prison system, put "our communities at greater risk.''

During the councilmember comment slot, Robert Joe expressed concerns about South Pasadena Police Chief Joseph Payne using Nixle to voice a political opinion.

Joe said he spoke with the Los Angeles County Sheriff, who said his department would not use Nixle to get out a message like Payne’s, and he requested that the city manager write an advisory for appropriate Nixle use.
