City Appoints Two Trustees to Library Board

Mayor John Buchanan serves as tie breaker in final vote.

The Sierra Madre City Council Tuesday chose Robert Stockly and Colin Braudrick as the new appointees to the Sierra Madre Library Board of Trustees. Stockly and Braudrick were chosen from among three applicants, two of whom appeared before the council to make their case for appointment to the position. Braudrick was not present at the meeting.

The two new appointees will fill two vacant positions on the five-member board. Trustees are appointed to three-year terms and have a number of duties including establishing Library policies and recommending an annual library budget to the City Council for approval.

Stockly and Braudrick will join Catherine Adde, Glenn Putnam and Pete Siberell to complete the Board. Council Member Nancy Walsh serves as the Council Liaison, and Library Services Director Tonie Buckner is the Staff Liaison.

Originally there were four applications submitted to fill the vacancies on the Board of Trustees, but with Sally Morrison withdrawing her application, the was left with three candidates to choose from: Braudrick, Stockly, and William “Bill” Nelson.

Mayor Pro Tem Josh Moran was excused from the vote due to a conflict of interest with one of the applicants. Council Member Joe Mosca cast his votes for Nelson and Stockly, while Council Member Nancy Walsh voted for Stockly and Braudrick.

Council Member MaryAnn MacGillivray only committed to Nelson, saying she was OK with either of the remaining candidates for the second position.

But, despite two votes for Nelson and two for Stockly, Mayor Buchanan stepped in with his surprising final vote for Braudrick and Stockly. Council Members seemed confused with the Mayor’s unusual tie-breaking approach, but backed his decision unanimously.

Braudrick is presently a member of the General Plan Steering Committee and Stockly is currently chair of the Sierra Madre Community Foundation and a member of the Rotary Club.

Correction: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that Colin Braudrick was in attendance at Tuesday's City Council meeting. Patch regrets the error.
