Pasadena Man Admits to Beating Neighbor's Dog To Death

A Pasadena man pleaded no contest Friday to an animal cruelty charge and was sentenced to a year in county jail.

A Pasadena man accused of beating his neighbor's dog to death pleaded no contest to an animal cruelty charge Friday and was sentenced to a year in county jail, according to a Pasadena Superior Court bailiff.

The man, Young Song, beat the 6-month-old German shepherd to death with a hammer in April 2011 while it was tethered in a neighbor's back yard, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. The dog's body was never found.

Song entered his plea Friday after a video of the beating was shown to jurors on Thursday, prosecutors said in a written statement.

Ricky Whitman, a spokeswoman for the Pasadena Humane Society, called the attack "horrific" in an interview Friday. The Humane Society was involved in the initial investigation into the crime and one of its lieutenants testified against Song on Thursday, Whitman said.

Song was sentenced to a year in county jail and three years probation and ordered to pay $75 in restitution to the owner of the dog. He is also barred from owning a pet for the next 10 years.

$75 and a year in jail... how is that nearly enough of a punishment? I don't normally hope for people to be beaten by inmates or guards in prison but for Mr. Song I might make an exception. I don't even see how I can allow my son to watch any of the Dreamworks movies he helped animate if it even puts $1 in his pocket, that is $1 too much.

$75.00!?!?! What an absurd amount!!! What a sweet puppy... I second Ree's desire. I hope you get the beating that you inflicted on the poor puppy.

The judge should have ordered a psychological evaluation.

I think people should things done to them that they have done to others, including animals. This guy is just plain evil. I wasn't aware he animated for Dreamworks, will boycott those films. The $75.00 and jail time was not nearly enough for taking a life!

This article has misinformation. The adult sized dog, age 16-months, had attacked the two small dogs of Mr. Song, attacked the man's wife and went after his infant son. The dog had attacked and bitten other children in the neighborhood. No doubt he took matters into his own hands. It's sad that people are cyber bullied and there is yellow journalism. Get your facts straight before reporting them. I'm sad for the Song family, any kid who was bitten by the dangerous dog, and the dog owner for tethering his dog and possibly neglecting the dog. What owner muzzles a dog and ties him up in his own back yard?
