Crime Blotter: Break-in Attempted Using Paperclip

The following information was supplied by the Sierra Madre Police Department as part of their weekly crime blotter. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Paperclip Lock Picking Attempt Fails

An attempted residential burglary was reported at 12:12 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 29, in the 100 block of West Laurel Avenue.

According to Sierra Madre police, an unidentified suspect or suspected “attempted to make entry into a residence using a paperclip. No entry was made.”

Items Stolen from Unlocked Garage

A home in the 300 block of North Auburn Avenue was burglarized on Friday, Sept. 2, when an unknown suspect or suspects entered an unlocked garage and stole multiple items.

According to the report, thieves made off with a blue E-Z Up tent and a radio controlled “X-cellerator” gas-powered toy car.

The incident was reported to the SMPD at 10:03 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 2.

El Monte Man Arrested for DUI

A man was arrested at 8:12 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 28 on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. The incident occurred near the intersection of Santa Anita Avenue and Grand View Avenue. 

According to the report, an officer stopped a 20-year-old El Monte resident for an unspecified vehicle code violation, thereafter determining that the driver was under the influence of alcohol. 

The driver was arrested and transported to Pasadena Police Department for booking on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Man Arrested for Narcotics Paraphernalia

A 49-year-old Perris, CA resident was arrested at 8:15 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 2, after Sierra Madre police determined the motorist had an outstanding warrant from and was allegedly in possession of narcotics paraphernalia. 

The incident occurred in the 600 block of North Auburn Avenue, according to reports. No other information was provided.

Resident Reports Identity Theft

At 6:03 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 2, the received a report from a resident of someone using their identity in order to obtain purchasing credit.

According to the report, the case “involves an unknown subject(s) opening multiple accounts in different cities using the victim’s personal information.” 

In the seven-day period between Sunday, Aug. 28, and Saturday Sept. 3, the Sierra Madre Police Department responded to approximately 281 calls for service. Of those calls, these incidents were considered the most notable and added to the Crime Blotter by the .
