Patch Wins at L.A. Press Club Awards

Patch took home four L.A. Press Club awards on Sunday night. Check out photos of the editors and the event.

Patch took home four wins at the 54th Annual L.A. Press Club Southern California Journalism Awards on Sunday night.

San Gabriel Valley Patch editors collectively won first place in the "Online News" category for coverage of the Nov. 30, 2011, windstorm, which caused unprecedented destruction and power outages in the foothills and Northeast Los Angeles. Patch editors were praised for their comprehensive and exhaustive reporting, which included breaking news, feature stories, photos and up-to-the-minute information.

Fellow Rancho Santa Margarita Patch editor Martin Henderson won first place in the "Online Sports News/Feature/Commentary" category.

Patch's coverage of the Seal Beach salon shootings also won kudos, with Seal Beach editor Paige Austin and Belmont Shore editor Nancy Wride taking third place in the Online News category for Scott Dekraai.

About 750 entries were submitted this year for just over 90 categories. The event was held at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.

Here's the full list of winning Patch editors:

Hi Ken, and Patch actually won a couple more. Martin Henderson won first place in sportswriting doing what Patch does best, hyperlocal, AND he won third place in the same sports writing category. (He believes his third place winner was actually the best.)

I am stunned and terribly disappointed that Mike Szymanski didn't win an award for his brilliant treatment of 'Carmageddon' explaining the history and significance of the bridge. This is background most of us knew nothing about. It was without a doubt the most informative article I've read recently in ANY local newspaper, including the Los Angeles Times. If he was not nominated -- why not? He's done outstanding work in covering breaking news stories but "History Flows Through Sepulveda Pass" will remain a landmark article that SHOULD have been recognized by serious journalists.
Mike, as we say in Nu Yawk, You was robbed!
Nancy Wride June 27, 2012 at 01:10 am
That was a great story. I ran it as well for all of the reasons you mentioned. He won a Patch West award for his work on that story, though, if it takes the sting out.....
Mike Szymanski June 27, 2012 at 01:29 am
Thank you Irene, we don't call you Studio City's Den Mom for nothing... thanks for the support! There will be bigger and better stories and the recognition is just the icing on the cake :)
Paul Zollo June 27, 2012 at 01:43 am
I agree - great writing.
Roger C. Memos June 27, 2012 at 02:17 am
i am SHOCKED that Studio City PATCH didn't win any awards! what gives? In my estimation, they have some of the best writers in the L.A. area. I find their coverage of their neighborhood the most comprehensive around - and most of their stories really reflect what makes Studio City such a great place to live in. They don't just report the new, they tell stories about people and issues in the community that matter. So sorry to see they weren't winners. Keep up the good work Mike S & Studio City Patch Team - In my eyes, YOU FOLKS ARE WINNERS!!
Panglonymous June 27, 2012 at 03:08 am
OMG, Martin, your hands, I am... speechless (BIG!)

I would say Eric, for the same reason you posted this announcement on Patch - so other Sierra MadreRead More residents will read it.

Sierra Madre Sue--Thanks for bringing this issue to light. We haven't had block parties on EastRead More Laurel, but we have had Neighborhood Watch and National Night Out parties at my house. I would love to have a block party, but it sounds expensive and complicated in Sierra Madre. I will make sure that others are aware of this issue. I agree that Sierra Madre is a small town, where you know all your neighbors and watch out for each other. That is what makes it so special.
SierraMadreSue Behrens June 11, 2013 at 11:48 am
Thank you Maria. I saw my letter got published in the Mountain Views last Saturday so hopefully ifRead More more people express the same opinion to the City, maybe they'll listen and react!
Maria M D June 11, 2013 at 01:36 pm
Sue--You are welcome and thanks for bringing attention to this issue. My friends, Jon and SarahRead More live on your block. They have enjoyed the block parties in the past.
Catherine Budincich May 28, 2013 at 12:11 pm
Yes. That is a good idea
LarKat May 28, 2013 at 01:31 pm
Even with students being sent to class with the individual supplies they need, teachers are sorelyRead More lacking basic supplies. Programs that help teachers are wonderful for the educators, schools and parents who are generally called upon to make up the difference.
Louis Educe May 28, 2013 at 06:22 pm
I guess some of my point is that instead of Staples, BigLots, Target etc. giving supplies andRead More discounts to teachers - somehow give it to the parents. By giving it to the schools/teachers it perpetuates the idea that it is "our" job to provide these supplies to the kids - and lets parents even more off the hook for taking responsibility for their own families. I will say though that MANY families in lower income areas set priorities for school and make decisions which teach kids that school and education are important priorities in both time and money. What is sad is that many also make the choice to spend what little funds they have on the latest high end phone, or fashion statement at the cost of being ready for class and learning. If you ask any teacher, we see this every year and now at the end of they year when kids haven't succeeded, they often ask US why their kids didn't do well... you spend money on where your heart is - and it wasn't in school.
