Deputies Clear Large Crowd at Store After Report of Shots Fired

Suspicious crowd packed into Altadena liquor store searched by police after deputy reported hearing gunfire nearby.

Authorities could not locate anyone related to a report of shots fired Friday night after clearing a huge crowd at an area liquor store.

Most of the 15 to 20 subjects packed into the store, near Lincoln Avenue and Figueroa Drive, were searched and questioned by authorities after a deputy on patrol reported hearing a single gunshot near the store, said Sergeant Booker Hollis of the Altadena Sheriff's Station.

The shot was heard around 9:45 p.m.

Authorities received no calls from residents about any gunshots.

Two of the subjects inside the store fled the scene west on Figueroa Drive for unknown reasons. Deputies decided not to follow and detain those two, considering the large group still inside the store and crowds of bystanders gathering Hollis said.

"There was quite a few people who were gathering around while this was going on. A couple of them were trying to look into cars while we were detaining these guys and we were concerned that they were becoming unruly," Hollis said.

Deputies from the Crescenta Valley Station, as well as Pasadena Police officers, were called to help control the crowds, Hollis said.

All the detained subjects were searched and found to have no weapons on them. Deputies found no shell casings, or any other evidence of a shooting, Hollis said. No one was arrested.

"After everybody was evacuated from the store, we went in to clear it and make sure nobody else was hiding," Hollis said.

The commotion quieted down roughly an hour later, authorities said.

Typical. This is common, and nothing new for All Star Liquor. The intersection of Lincoln and Figueroa is a meeting spot for all neighborhoods. When members of different sets meet, it is not uncommon to have a situation. Liquor stores sell liquor and blunt wraps. The dark cover of Lincoln and Figueroa feeds that well. Ezz Stop is too well-lit and is in the center of town. It doesn't happen there. All Star is the ideal setting to meet, make deals, and so on. That's why it happens there. Want to stop it? Have a deputy posted there nightly from dark to closing time. Problem solved. Wal-Mart will brighten up the dark corridor. Save Altadena.

Seriously, this liquor store needs to be shut down. The thugs hang out and cause problems at all hours of the night. It's just a big negative in the community.

I agree. It is a blight on the community. We are fortunate that Walmart is moving in. People who think that an upscale business would move there live in a dream world.

maybe because there was no shooting at all, a suspect more than a week ago escaped from a altadena sheriff on foot while being hand cuffed at that same location more than a week ago. the sheriff made no attempts to chase the suspect either, he sat in his car and contemplated a while before trying to do anything. acorriding to witnesses.he was wanted for a warrant. now the night in question his "brother" who also is wanted on a warrant was in the liquor store that night and managed to escape all those sheriff's and police threw the front door now how is this even possible, what is really going on. they had the owner and 2 workers and every customer come out with thier hands behind there heads walking backwards, also a young toddler in his mother's arm's with 1 hand on her child and 1 hand behind her head. so i ask you, is there something wrong with this picture? oh and get this the suspect that fled with the cuffs on is still free walking in our streets

the owner and the employee's call the sheriffs station or 911 for assistance on different issues and no 1 shows up not 1 sheriff, why is that? but they hear imiginary gun shots and they all come running. that makes no sense. from what i seen this week they have an upgraded security system lets see what the sheriffs and the criminals are really doing, because apparently it's nothing good. And to my fellow residents of Altadena please dont get me wrong about our sheriffs department ive been a resident for more than 23 years, ive always trusted and looked at our sheriffs with great admiration and sense of security and relief when they are present, but this is outrageous and something needs to be done.
