Patch Blog: Disaster Preparedness for Senior Citizens in Sierra Madre

Girl Scout Gold Award Project leads La Salle High School Student to help the senior citizens of Sierra Madre become disaster prepared!

Hi, my name is Emma Martinez and am currently working on completing my Gold Award Project for Girl Scouts (equivalent to the Eagle Award in Boy Scouts).  I have been with my troop since kindergarten and although my troop has dwindled in size, I have stuck with it in hopes of one day completing the highest achievement in Girl Scouts.  I am entering my junior year at La Salle High School and work on several service projects throughout the year.

I am working on a project that is very important to me and hopefully, to the seniors in our community.  I live on a culdesac in Sierra Madre, primarilly made up of seniors.  During the high winds in December, we lost power for 6.5 days, leaving us feeling helpless, cold, and scared for our neighbors.  My grandmother was released from the hospital just before the winds occured, so my worries were even greater knowing that she is sick and fragile without heat and power.  This led me to choose my project.

I am hoping to provide a minimum of 250 disaster preparedness kits to the senior citizens in our community of Sierra Madre.  I am working with Susan Clifton, Sierra Madre Rec Center/Senior Center coordinator, and April Kelcy, owner of Earthquake Solutions, who will assist me with purchasing discount items for the kits.  Each kit will have water, nonperishable food, glowsticks, emergency blanket, whistle, mini first aid kit, and emergency contact/medication information sheet.  With the help of my friends we will put the kits together and ready for distribution at the Wellness Fair in Sierra Madre as well as at the Senior Center.

My goal is to raise $3,250.00, which is the cost of putting together 250 kits.  I have currently raised $1,900.00 to date.  I have raised money through babysitting, donations from family and friends as well as the VFW (thank you very much Mr. Loera), yardsales, and selling items on Craig's List.

If you would like more information you can email me at:emma.martinez96@gmail.com or visit my donation page at: http://preparingtheelderly.mydagsite.com.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, I think it is a great project for a great cause.  We need to take care of our elderly!

What are these "organizations that can assist educators in providing an additional incomeRead More source for school supplies?" What are the other "big retailers" besides Staples that are helping teachers with rewards programs? This is a great subject but there is little detail here beyond a link to the Staples program. Would love to read a follow up piece with more useful information.
