John Shear Honored at Santa Anita Opening Day (Photos)

Shear received a statue of the famous racehorse "John Henry" during the third race on Saturday, Oct. 1.

Sierra Madre’s Hometown Hero John Shear was honored in front of a crowd of thousands Saturday during opening day of Santa Anita’s fall meet.

Sierra Madre Weekly Editor and ace photographer Terry Miller was on hand to capture the presentation of a small statue inscribed with the words “In gratitude for your heroism March 12, 2011” and his photos are posted on the Weekly’s website, sierramadreweekly.com.

Miller's photos show a smiling Shear accepting the token of appreciation from Santa Anita brass in the racetrack infield.
