Funeral Services for Alverno Grad, Former St. Rita's Parishioner

Former Arcadia resident and Sierra Madre community member struck by speeding car near her San Diego home.

Funeral services are being held this morning for Alverno High School graduate and former member of St. Rita’s Parish Joan Milazzo.

Milazzo, 56, was struck and killed by a speeding automobile last Tuesday morning, Aug. 30, in the Del Sur area of North County San Diego where she was hiking with her husband and sister.

Previously an Arcadia resident, Milazzo and her husband had recently moved south to join family living in the area after retiring from a long career at the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca.

Milazzo grew up in the San Gabriel Valley and graduated from in Sierra Madre. She was previously a member of in Sierra Madre.

Details of the incident were released in a statement from the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office.

“They were crossing Camino Del Sur Road when a vehicle traveling on the southbound lane at a high rate of speed lost control and skidded into the decedent as she stepped onto the curb,” the press release stated.

Milazzo was transported to Scripps La Jolla Hospital with blunt force trauma and later pronounced dead after efforts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful.

San Diego Police Traffic Division is handling the accident investigation and charges are said to be pending against the driver of the car.

Funeral Services for Milazzo services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6, at Church of the Nativity in Rancho Santa Fe.
