The Sex Lives of Cannibals - It's Not What You Think!

This week's book review features a hysterical tale on audiobook available at our Sierra Madre library.

The Sex Lives of Cannibals: Adrift in the Equatorial Pacific - By J. Maarten Troost

I’m glad I was not on an airplane listening to this Audiobook.

My guffaws surely would have disturbed other passengers. Instead, I highly recommend listening to this hilarious tale in the manner which I did: driving on a long road trip.

Wonderfully narrated by BBC presenter Simon Vance, (crisp accent, British wit) this madcap travel tale cum memoir highlights the author’s misadventures on a remote pacific island.

Escaping civilization to the island of Tarawa with his lady love, (sounds appealing and utterly romantic), Mr. Troost reveals a youthful naiveté: discovering that life here means no running water, air conditioning, electricity, worst of all: no beer!

Overcoming obstacles like debilitating heat, horrid pollution, shark infested waters, the young newcomers never the less go native, falling in love with the islanders, their customs and culture, eventually forgiving the bureaucrats in charge their infuriating blasé attitudes.

The author researched the island’s history well, yet this action packed story is far from boring: it’s uproariously funny similar to writers Nora Ephron or Bill Bryson. Listen to this and laugh!
