Some Further Feline Reading

Some suggested feline-related reading following our recent cat sightings in Sierra Madre!

"Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World" (Grand Central Publishing, 2008) - By Vicki Myron with Bret Witter

If you are a fan of books, libraries, pets (cats especially), you will enjoy this memoir by a Librarian from a small town in Iowa, who discovered a tiny kitten in the book return box of her library one cold winter day.

You will also enjoy it if you like true life tales of those who meet challenges head on and overcome them. Vicki Myron is such a person. Her narrative encompasses juggling a career with graduate school, motherhood, alcoholism in the family, and concern for her neighbors during the worst farming crisis in America.

Midwestern values and traditions that echo Sierra Madre's are sprinkled throughout this story. When she found Dewey the cat, named for the decimal system in public libraries, her world brightened.

Dewey flourished and managed to enchant all who entered the library, helping children gain confidence, winning over the crustiest curmudgeons, and uniting awkward teens and their parents. He loved hopping on and off of the laps of the willing, riding around the library on the book cart and sleeping in the stacks.

I think it’s safe to say that he was the most extraordinary cat you will ever read about. (I thought my cat Lucky was special – he was found in a dumpster and was unusually people oriented as well, but not compared to Dewey!)  I simply fell in love with this story, and the relationship between Vicki and Dewey in particular.

As his fame spread, articles appeared in the newspapers, documentaries were made and visitors from around the world poured into the library to meet Dewey. He simply loved people and was a legend. There was even a rumor that Hollywood beckoned and the movie starring Meryl Streep as Librarian Vicki Myron. Even if that hasn’t happened yet, Dewey Readmorebooks (his full name) does have a website and there are children’s books that have been written about him as well.

Our has a copy of this heartwarming, New York Times bestseller, so check it out!
