Where Would Taylor's Market Go?

Patch discusses the Fresh & Easy business proposal with Taylor's Market.

Cashiers greet you with a friendly smile. The local butcher knows your name and your favorite cut of meat. Sitting at the corner of Sierra Madre Boulevard and Baldwin Avenue, Taylor’s Ol’ Fashioned Meat Market is a local favorite. However, Fresh & Easy recently submitted a proposal to build a store in the building where the business currently sits and the future of Taylor’s Market in Sierra Madre is unclear.

At this point in time, the Fresh & Easy proposition is just a proposal; it hasn’t been approved by the Planning Commission or gone through zoning. Six years ago, the property was sold and fell under the ownership of the Montecito Development Group. The company wanted to develop sub condos and apartments for multiuse purposes, but that didn’t come to fruition. As such, the Montecito Development Group gave Don Taylor permission to stay in the facility.

“I’m so grateful to them. I’m very fortunate to be here. They’re wonderful, they’ve been really good to me,” commented Taylor on his relationship with the organization.

The store currently has a monthly lease with the Montecito Development Group. According to Taylor, the principal of the Montecito Development Group was considering on selling the property and would notify Taylor in the coming months on the sale. In the interim, Fresh & Easy requested a liquor license and expressed interest in the property for development purposes.

“Sierra Madre is a wonderful town, people here are very wonderful,” remarked Taylor on his interactions with members of the community.

Taylor’s Market has been in the community for 45 years and began primarily as a meat market. The business expanded to include produce and groceries later on. Taylor’s Market has a strong and loyal support in Sierra Madre.

“I wouldn’t want to move somewhere else, but there aren’t many big buildings in Sierra Madre. There are small office types, real estate businesses, liquor stores, but nothing of the size that we would need,” said Taylor. “I have such a wonderful following here, I’d hate to move elsewhere.”
