Should Fresh & Easy Come to Sierra Madre?

Local news sources say that the grocery chain Fresh & Easy is looking to open in Sierra Madre, right where Taylor's Market currently sits. Do you think this is a good idea?

Reports on Sierra Madre News Net and Mountain Views News say that the grocery chain Fresh & Easy has submitted an application to operate in Sierra Madre. Their desired location? Where currently sits.

The plans call for tearing down the existing building and constructing an entirely new one on the lot, according to Sierra Madre News Net.

Sierra Madre is lacking when it comes to grocery shopping, and it's hard to ignore the convenience of a food store like Fresh & Easy. But, would it fit with Sierra Madre's village atmosphere?

Plus, where would Taylor's go? Taylor's has long been a favorite of mine. I love the smiling employees, and their meat products are the freshest and best-tasting I've encountered in the area. I'm pretty sure my Thanksgiving would not have been as tasty without a turkey from Taylor's.

So- what do you think? Should Fresh & Easy come to Sierra Madre, or would you rather keep the chain out of town? Take our poll and let us know in the comments.

Sierra Madre has never been grocery friendly. People complain about everything whenever a new business wants to open in Sierra Madre and the closest place we have to shop is the worn out Albertson's. Let Fresh & Easy open up and allow people to walk to shop and go green like everybody espouses but do not practice.

I personally don't like Fresh & Easy. I tried the store in Arcadia several times. I found out of date food on the shelves, which bothered me. 90 percent of the things they sell are their house brand. There are very few name brands - not a problem as I buy house brands all the time at Trader Joes and other stores, but I wasn't wowed by any of it. I would hope that if they do build a new building the look of it would be in keeping with the esthetic of the town and not - like that new proposed facade of the retirement place - have all the charm of a strip mall in Arcadia. I would not likely patronize Fresh and Easy. I don't think they pay attention to detail and the stores are depressing inside with low lighting and bare concrete floors and no checkers. You get to work for them when you check out. The one I went to several times in Lakewood when I lived down there had cracked and uneven flooring that they just polished up. I suppose they thought it was "industrial" looking - but it looked low budget and unkept. The store in Arcadia is in better condition, but still not appealing. If they build it, I'll pass.

Fresh & Eazy says they're green? Who doesn't? Oil companies say they are green, developers are green, Edison says they're green even though their coal burning generating plants in the desert are some of the biggest greenhouse gas producers anywhere. Screw these union busting British bums. I say stand with Taylors.

Having shopped routinely at Fresh and Easy in Huntington Beach, I find it hard to disparage the shop or brand, however, Taylor's is a local gem that shouldn't be compromised at any cost. With all due respect, I think one would be hard pressed to find a turkey like the one I roasted this past Thanksgiving at the F&E. Taylor's is a small grocery with exceptional variety and quality of selection.

It isn't that the town isn't "market friendly". When I was growing up here there were two thriving markets in town; Howies at the east end and Roess' Market at the west end. What happened is that Albertson's opened, followed by Ralphs, Whole Foods, and Sprouts just over our west border, and Fresh and Easy and Ralphs just to the east in Arcadia, all having the space for more selection and diversity of foodstuffs, and that's not counting Smart & Final, Costco, Target and Walmart, etc, etc. The small markets couldn't compete with the bigger ones. I miss both Howies and particularly Roess' as I grew up patronizing the store and the checkers at all three registers (yes, three!) knew my by name and my family too. I would love to see an independent market where Howies was, but it will probably take a chain like F&E to compete with the other big markets and their "super low prices" just outside of town.

I used to live in San Gabriel, just blocks from the other Howies. LOVED shopping there. Really wish there was a way to get Howies back in Sierra Madre. F&E will NEVER get my business, and I would encourage others to stay far away as well.

I agree. No more chains in Sierra Madre. It really takes away the quaint atmosphere.

The CIty of Sierra Madre needs thriving business. And business needs customers to succeed. So, from that perspective, I support Fresh & Easy coming here. Taylor's has a good following, and I would think they could find another location.

I don't know Sierra Madre. But I do know if you go to F&E just once to look and see you'll be disappointed -- lots of strange brands, limited selection, and relatively high prices for brand names. But when you try their house brands, you'll discover they are as good and, often, better than name brands; that with coupons, Reward card, and soon-to-expire deals you will save a lot of money; and all in all it's a pretty good market.

I have shopped a couple of times at Fresh and Easy and was very disappointed in the low quality of the food found there---I decided long ago that I would never go back. It would be more than disappointing to lose Taylor's which has quality foods from their meats, seafood, frozen goods, fresh produce, etc...I hope we don't lose Taylor's. I would prefer to see Taylor's sell their business to someone who wishes to expand the high quality food line that is already there. To have a low quality chain such as Fresh and Easy does not fit this community!

A Trader Joe's would be better, but I'd be very happy to have a F&E within walking distance. I go to the one in Arcadia quite often and (other than the produce) am pretty happy with the selection. And the self-checkouts are a lot more user-friendly than the ones at Ralphs. I am a little concerned to hear that the plan would be to tear down the existing building and rebuild. Wouldn't a retrofit (like what happened to the Wild Oats that became a F&E on S. Lake in Pasadena) be possible?

At least I would be able to shop in town and thus generate revenue for the city rather than have to use Albertson's or Ralph's. Personally I would prefer a Von's pavilion store as in Monrovia - good quality items. If not that type of store then a good Indian restaurant - sadly lacking in our culinary experience in town. As to Taylor's - being vegetarian that won't affect me one bit!

We should be talking with the property owners...are they selling the property or is this all just speculation?

My dear Sierra Madreans, and that is also because F & E are a lousy "boody britt" consortium.... find someone else that would hire our local unemployed residents in order to help the local economic system.... Enough said!!!!

Enough said!!!! Remember, the ARCO by BP mishap and fiasco in the gulf.... By the way, that reminds me, who needs 2 refueling petrol stations in our town? Let's get rid of one or both of them anyway!!!!

WE need something (upgraded version of current Taylor's meat) with ORGANIC produce and groceries! WE need to have local farm fresh produce served on our dinner table every day!!!
