What a disappointment. We have no grocery store in town and Fresh and Easy would have been great convenience. I like Taylor's but the era of a getting a store back like Howie's or Rouse's is long gone. Sierra Madre is soo "little old lady" and so business unfriendly. Howie's is a dump.

But still fresh enough to wrap yesterday's fish in.

Fresh and Easy definitely didn't withdraw because Sierra Madre is business unfriendly. If a chain like F&E / Tesco makes a decision like that (pro or con) there are financial reasons behind; nothing else. Trader Joe's would be a great alternative. Having Trader Joe's here and F&E right around the corner would be awesome. I personally base my personal liking/decision completely on my own convenience in this case - and having both would be wonderful. However, all those that were against F&E because they are owned by the British Tesco Company might find this interesting: Trader Joe's is owned by ALDI, a German chain; - the biggests grocery chain worldwide. But again: based on my (all our) convenience, having a grocery store in Sierra Madre (-and no, the Taylor's MEAT MARKET is no grocery store-) would be great.

Who lost more money last year did you think, BHaas. Patch or Fresh & Easy?

I agree with BHaas

Folks, Trader Joe's is NOT coming to Sierra Madre! They've done studies before and found the area not suitable. The space isn't big enough and TJ's has a formula for opening new stores based on "roof counts". In other words, potential additional customers that would be served.. As we all know, there is a very large TJ's just down the road in Hastings Ranch with massive amounts of parking. I would bet that just about everyone in Sierra Madre that shops at TJ's uses that store. Why would they open yet another in such a limited space in an oftentimes congested area (foot races, street faires, parades, Friday after school student invasion, etc.) with next to no parking?

Taylor's has a superb fruit and vegetable section, and of course the meat market is as good or better than any of the bigger stores. It's just too bad that the rest of the original Howie's space can't be utilized to expand the store.

BHaas is on the button. Would love to see a good Indian restaurant in town too, to compliment the other ethnic eateries. If we can't get a grocery store I think that the old Howies is a perfect place for it.

I agree with Michael. We do a lot of shopping at Taylor's and also we've been here for 34 years and I feel a certain loyalty to Mr. Taylor and his store. You need a bigger store? Get your ass in the car and drive a couple of miles. Maybe I'm 'old fashioned'. Fresh & Easy withdraws, yea, yea, yea!!!!!!

I second that yea, yea, yea. I don't think you will find very many meat markets like Taylors anywhere else in this area. I have shopped there for 40 years and am happy to be able to continue.See you later Fresh and Easy.

It would be nice if Taylor's could expand all the way into the old Howie's space. Howie's was the perfect size for a grocery store in town. More than a convenience store, but if you need a full-on grocery store, there's Albertson's. I did not want F&E or a TJ's right IN Sierra Madre, especially on that corner! Those people who think "its a shame" F&E dropped out...do you realize Taylor's would be kicked out, the building demolished, and a large, brightly lit sparkly new green building with a big parking lot would have been put on that spot? In the CENTER of the town? No no no...bad idea! Same goes for a TJ's. It just doesn't fit with the character of the center of Sierra Madre. Not to mention the increased traffic, which would have resulted in putting a stoplight in the crossroads instead of a 4-way stop, again something that would have forever changed the character of our beloved town. Sorry to vote for nostagia over convenience, what with F&E and TJ less than 5 miles away. I prefer to keep unique spots like Taylor's, who has the best meats and produce around. Those people that want suburbia moved here should consider relocating to Pasadena next a convenient mini-mall.

Whoa, Mike! Having a bad day?
Dj marovish August 06, 2012 at 03:23 AM
We need a high quality mom and pop grocery & deli, along with our Taylor's! No fresh & ez, no TJ!
