Art Fair: Local Artists' Booths Were Among the Most Popular at the Sierra Madre Art Fair

Shopping or browsing, munching or creating, hundreds of Sierra Madre Art Fair opening-day visitors had one thing in common: They were all having fun.

The May 7 opening of the Sierra Madre Art Fair drew visitors who were especially interested in local artists.

The Friends of the Sierra Madre Library presents this event as a fundraiser each year. Jury member and exhibitor Nancy Doyle says, “It is one of the few remaining outdoor fine art fairs.”

David Darbyshire who studied drawing and oil painting in Sierra Madre with Alfred James Dewey, paints with oil and watercolor and draws with pencil and ink. His subjects are seascape, landscape and still life. Aviation art is of great interest to him.

Nancy Doyle has been creating compelling pencil on illustration board drawings for 40 years. Many of her portraits feature Native Americans. She says “with their skin tones and ornamentation they fascinate me.”

Monica Dybalski has been making jewelry since high school. She started out using her mother’s thread and needle and would get supplies from her native Philadelphia. She still retains some of her original pieces. Her hip, fun and beautiful style is very engaging.

Carolyn Gravatte lives and works at her Cedarhawke studio/home, nestled up against the foothills of Sierra Madre.  Painting in a style of realism- with a touch of impressionism, Carolyn captures local village scenes and landscapes in oil paint on canvas.

Andrew Kasiske worked professionally in the photographic and visual arts. Now he concentrates on fine art photography and portraiture, offering his vision of the world to a wider audience. Recent work includes landscapes set in the natural environment as well as work set in a more developed and urban context.

Originally from the Lebou tribe of Senegal in West Africa and now based in Sierra Madre Djibril N'Doye is an internationally recognized, award-winning “woodburned” drawing artist. A recent documentary film Ndap li-Djibril N'Doye Lebou Artist explores his unique work.

Painter Torey Wahlstrom has been working as a designer and artist since 1992. Her varied background includes designing a Wall Street financial weekly, creating sets for videos, and designing window displays at Anthropologie’s flagship Soho, NY store.

Loretta Weeks has been painting for a decade exploring color and expression on canvas and panel. Affinity for horses is evident in her work which has been shown all over the world, including an invitation to exhibit at Biennale Internazionale Dell’Arte Contemporanea in Florence, Italy.

Jewelry designer Anthe Wosczyna works from her studio at the foot of the mountains in Sierra Madre. Using the finest materials, antique French cut steel beads, tiny Japanese glass beads, gemstones and Swarovski crystals her jewelry is designed to evoke a sense of wonder and beauty.
