Wind Warnings Canceled But Cold Snap Remains

The Southland remained in the grips of a cold snap today, producing more record lows, and high winds continued to buffet the region, but much less fiercely than had been forecast.

The cold temperatures of recent days result from a cold air mass hovering over the region, according to National Weather Service meteorologists. That air mass will remain in place through Wednesday morning, although overnight lows may be a little higher than today's, forecasters said.

Record lows for a January 15 were set this morning in both downtown Los Angeles and Sandberg in the Antelope Valley. Downtown got down to 34 degrees Fahrenheit this morning, as it did Monday, when a daily record was also set, while the low in Sandberg fell to 15. This morning's lows broke a record of 36 set in downtown on this day in 2007 and of 20 in Sandberg, also in 2007.

High winds, meanwhile, continued to buffet the region overnight. A 58-mile-per-hour gust was recorded overnight at Chilao in the San Gabriel Mountains in Los Angeles County but after sunrise, the wind there was gusting at 36 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

Several wind warnings and wind advisories were scheduled today but canceled this morning when wind speeds turned out to be weaker than had been forecast.

Highs today were expected to be in the 40s in the Antelope Valley, the 50s in the Santa Clarita Valley and the 60s in much of the rest of the Greater L.A. area. By Thursday, many Southland communities once again will be enjoying highs in the 70s.
