What do You Want to See Downtown?

With so many empty storefronts, there’s room for new businesses in Sierra Madre. What would you like to see set up shop?

News that a martial arts studio is moving into the western part of Sierra Madre’s business district has polarized some members of the community. Some are largely in favor of the new business, while others are saying that they’d like to see something “more useful.”

Martial Arts Studio Approved by Planning Commission

With the recent closings of Sierra Madre Books, Iris Intrigue, the vacant space that was formerly Steamers on Sierra Madre Blvd., there are lots of empty storefronts in the business district.

So, we’d like to know- what businesses, stores or services would you like to see downtown?

To get the conversation going- here’s what some people said in response to the martial arts studio:

“I couldn’t think of a better business,” said Sierra Madre resident John Herrmann at last week’s Planning Commission meeting. “This one takes calories off instead of putting them on.”

“I just think there are enough gyms, salons, and restaurants here. An actual grocery store would be nice... or a pet store, or a thrift store,” said Allison Ramsey on our Facebook page.

Multiple Patch commenters have suggested that a Trader Joe’s would be useful in Sierra Madre.

So- what do you want to see in these empty storefronts? Are any of you thinking of stepping up to the plate and opening a new business in the spaces available? Tell us in the comments!

I would like to see a ladies clothing consignment store, that carried a variety of clothing, but not designer. Also, would love an Indian restaurant.

Several people have mentioned they'd like a thrift store, but Sierra Madre has the Wistaria Thrift Store and Laurel's, which consigns dresses. Have you ever been to these stores?

An Indian restaurant or Chinese Dim Sum would be delightful! Look at how well Taco Fiesta is doing. We miss Howies, although the produce section of Taylors is very good as is the produce at our Farmers Market. Growing up in Sierra Madre we had 'Paper Palace' for stationary and a 'Five and Dime' like Woolworths, a quirky shop called 'Keepsake' as well as a wonderful Deli (based in Pasadena) called Stottlemeyers.

A deli that prepares fresh sandwiches would be awesome. Restaurants are great, but sometimes you just need to grab-and-go!

I've always wanted a movie theater in town but it would bring in too much out of town traffic. Is that necessarily a bad thing? But I would definitely be happy with Trader Joes or an amazing deli.
