Sierra Madre Float Delays Rose Parade after Mechanical Failure
Governor's Award-winning float given assistance by AAA tow truck.
The Sierra Madre Rose Float suffered a mechanical failure in Old Town Pasadena on Orange Grove Boulevard just south of Colorado Boulevard.
The stall occurred right before the start of the nationally televised intersection, forcing the parade to a full halt at 9:15 a.m. on New Year's Day.
The parade resumed shortly thereafter when an Automobile Club of Southern California tow truck was called into service to tow the Sierra Madre Rose Float through Pasadena along the five-mile parade route.
This is the second time in as many years that the Sierra Madre Float has experienced a mechanical failure in the parade. Last year's float experienced a stall further down Colorado Boulevard, out of sight from the parade grandstands and live television coverage. The Sierra Madre Rose Float Association was fined $1,000 for last year's incident.
Despite the hitch, the the Sierra Madre Rose Float Association's, "Suenos de California" float won this year's Governor's Award, one of the Tournament of Roses Parade's most prestigious awards which is awarded to the float which "best depicts life in California."
Pasadena Police said the ten of thousands of parade fans who spent the night along the parade route were largely well-behaved, though there were about 20 arrests made for public drunkenness and other offenses, according to CNS wire reports.
As the parade draws to a close, all this year's floats will be on display for the public on Sierra Madre Boulevard in Pasadena's Victory Park at the eastern edge of the city. The annual event draws thousands of float fans, with viewing taking place through Sunday afternoon.

Our float was the most beautiful float in the parade!!! I got to see it going through town on Friday night, and I could smell the roses and the citrus! Thank you to all the volunteers for another job well done!
