Public Hearing for Martial Arts Studio
The Planning Commission will consider a request tonight for a martial arts studio to move into an empty retail space on Sierra Madre Blvd.
Sierra Madre Blvd. could soon see a martial arts studio.
The Planning Commission will hold a public hearing tonight to consider Gary Gapezzani's request to open a martial arts studio at 303 W. Sierra Madre Blvd., right next to Arnold's Hardware. The 3,300 square foot space is currently empty, but was formerlly occupied by Highlander Jr. Market & Liquor.
A Conditional Use Permit (CUP) is required for any fitness studio (or similar business) to open in Sierra Madre. According to city code, a permit is required to ensure that "such uses will be rendered compatible with other uses located in the general area."
The Planning Commission welcomes public comment at their meetings. Members request that speakers limit their time to four minutes.
Tonight's meeting will take place at 7:00 p.m. in City Council Chambers, 232 W. Sierra Madre Blvd.

I'd rather see an Indian or Chinese restaurant - sadly lacking food choice in town!

So, let's see... in the past couple of years, the west side of SM business has lost a grocery store, a liquor store, a video rental store, a hair salon... and we've gained an architechtural firm that looks to have about three people employed (that guards their large parking lot zealously with chains and signs - with no one ever parked there), a comic book store that's never open and now... ANOTHER gym-type facility (what will that be... about the fourth in town?).
There's also word that the large abandoned area on the north side of the street will soon turn into an assisted living facility. All of these will increase traffic and impact parking on our side of town and add absolutely NO service to the average citizen.
I have nothing against a karate studio, but in a 3300 sq. foot facility right in the center of a business district? I am really having a hard time understanding the plan.

Another restaurant would compliment the ones nearby and that end of town would become more attractive to stroll to from the town center.
