Mountain Lion Kills Small Dog, Reportedly Attacks Other Animals

A mountain lion apparently killed the small dog in the backyard of a Sierra Madre home near Vista Circle Drive on Thursday night.

The Sierra Madre Community Emergency Response Team issued a reminder for residents to be on the lookout for mountains lions after a small dog was apparently killed by one of these animals in the backyard of a Sierra Madre home on Thursday night.

The reminder was posted on the Sierra Madre CERT facebook page about 6:45 p.m. Friday and it read:

"Please be watchful for mountain lions in the Sierra Madre Canyon and keep a close eye on small children and pets.

Apparently a mountain lion went over a fence on Vista Circle Dr and into a backyard on Thursday evening [March 7] around 6:30 and killed a small dog. On Wednesday and Thursday nights there were reports of deer or other small animals being attacked on the hillside between Vista Circle Dr. and Sturtevant Dr."

According to the Pasadena Star-News, a mountain lion was also spotted wandering through the city earlier this week.

The animal was first spotted at Santa Anita Avenue and Oakwood Avenue at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. It then appeared at Foothill Avenue and Camillo Road just after 10 p.m. And was again seen at 10:32 p.m. when a resident saw the lion in the 500 block of Los Rocas Drive with a house cat in its mouth, Sierra Madre police Sgt. Esther Doyle told the newspaper.

If a resident spots a mountain lion or any suspicious activity, he/she should immediately contact the Sierra Madre Police Department at (626) 355-1414. 

Sierra Madre CERT is a training program for all-risks and all-hazards. One of the team's goals is to educate the citizens of Sierra Madre about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact the area and train them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.
