Fundraiser for Mother of Two, Cancer Patient

Sonia Kosker, a checker at Taylor's Ol' Fashioned Meat, has been diagnosed with cancer. There will be a fundraiser for her on March 24.

Sonia Kosker, a checker known for her smile and customer service at , has been diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung and Thyroid Cancer. There will be a fundraiser on Saturday March 24 at Taylor's to assist Sonia with her medical and living expenses.

Kosker is a mother of two daughters (one who is away at college) and has worked at Taylor’s for several years. After she received her diagnosis several weeks ago, she took leave from her job to concentrate on treatments and beating the disease. However, the loss of income is taking its toll, and Kosker unfortunately does not qualify for government aid.

Laura Hirsh, owner of Sierra Madre's , is sponsoring the fundraiser to help Kosker with her expenses. Hirsh only knows Sonia from seeing her during her trips for groceries, but heard about her situation.

“I knew she needed help and I wanted to do something,” said Hirsh. The fundraiser will include a silent auction, a bake sale and professional chair massages ($1/min), with all proceeds going to help the Kosker family.

Hirsh is hoping the community will come out to show their support.

“I have always been appreciative of how generous this community is and I encourage people to come out Saturday and raise as much as we can for Sonia,” Hirsh said.

Hirsh noted that Kosker has just started chemotherapy and so far “she is doing quite well.”

Taylor’s is located at 14 E. Sierra Madre Blvd. and the fundraiser will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

If you would like to help you can donate an item or gift certificate for a silent auction, or attend the fundraiser and make a cash donation.

If anyone can’t make the fundraiser but still wants to donate, Taylor's has set up a coin collection bin.
